A stranger punched me - the way a friend would punch.

I've been writing every day since I was ten and I don't look at the old parts very often. When I do I find things like this:

“Also I am planning on hosting (is that a word?) a circus.”
- age 10

“A stranger punched me in the hall today, the way a friend would punch! I need to find them.”
- age 13

“Don’t treat me like a child. I am two months away from possibly having a learner’s permit.”
- age 14

“Three wishes: lots of money, be really pretty, don’t really need a third wish.”
- age 15

“I feel so lonely and angry and no one understands me. I also have a pretty solid tan.”
- age 17

We are going to be friends

Now that we've established how cool being a babysitter at age 24 is, I have an awesome babysitting story. I got a new (client, but my friends tease me for calling them clients so I'll say) family last week, and went to meet them for the first time Friday. I kind of hate meeting a new family, it's like a first date and once on a first date I hid behind a buffet table until the guy thought I was lost and wandered off.

This family had an 11-year-old girl. As I biked to their house I thought about what I was like at 11, just for reference. I was weird at 11. I know a lot of kids and I have yet to meet one who is as weird as I was as a child. All the kids I babysit are put-together, own iPhones, avoid carbs, and are a bit too cool for school. Sometimes too too cool for school in my opinion. Until Friday when I met the best 11-year-old in the world.

She answered the door wearing a shirt with a picture of a cow holding a loaf of bread and it said "Paris." I had that shirt when I was little. I wore it with a "Got Milk?" hat because I felt like they went together.

"Do you like chocolate?" she asked.

I didn't have to answer. As soon as we made eye contact both of us knew that we had finally met our best friend, a person who was exactly like us in every way.

Alright I did answer. I love chocolate.

But this girl has the most beautiful off-kilter sometimes-hilarious-sometimes-hopelessly-bizarre sense of humor. She has hair so thick it goes past her shoulders. She painted a life-size portrait of Obama and hung it over her desk. She is obsessed with baseball. She speaks French. "Why don't we decorate the kitchen like it's a café and invent every kind of hot chocolate we can think of?" she asked.

While watching her cat pee in the yard she sighed and announced "I pretty much live in denim." Not because it was relevant. Just because she had a thought and felt like she needed to say it. Where have you been all my life, 11-year-old girl? Love has a name, and it won't be revealed so as not to put any children in danger.

But I love this girl.

She is exactly like I was at age 11, and exactly how I guess I still am except now I'm slightly taller. She times her showers. Have you ever met anyone besides me who times their showers to see if they can set a personal record every day? I haven't. If you have, I'd like to meet them. I have a shirt with a cow and a loaf of bread on it they can borrow.

my computer doesn't think saggy is a word.

Last week at the grocery store the lines were a nightmare - about fifteen minutes long, and the worst sort of fifteen minutes, where you get stuck behind a lady buying a decade's worth of shampoo because there was a newspaper special. But I struck gold in aisle three. Even though it wasn't labeled "Express" or "No Shampoo-Hoarders," the only person in front of me was an old man covered in tattoos, who I guess no one wanted to stand behind.

A lot of my friends have awesome-looking tattoos, and given the permanence of tattoos I'm assuming they'll still have them when they're old. People always say "oh you think tattoos look cool, wait until you're old and saggy and covered in tattoos - what will your grandchildren say?

Here's the thing about that.

A lot of my friends have awesome-looking butts.

Which will also become saggy. A lot of my friends have awesome-looking hair, which will either turn white and inexplicably short and fluffy, or just disappear. And did you know that your nose keeps growing your entire life? According to my albeit limited research, none of these things are caused by tattoos. You can get old and saggy with tattoos, or old and saggy without them. And I don't know about you, but I don't much care what my grandchildren have to say. I'm going to have things to tell them.

I'll use this paragraph to mention that I don't have any tattoos and don't plan on ever getting any. Yet I will still age.

Tattoos when you're old just mean that when you were younger you were awesome. Or I guess this guy could have gotten them last week. He didn't tell me. He did tell me that the groceries I was purchasing were all available at the dollar store a couple blocks over for just a dollar. I thanked him, and then hid my shame with pretend fixation on a National Enquirer cover. It said Demi Moore was trying to commit suicide. I wonder if Demi Moore ever thinks "Wonder what the National Enquirer is saying about me!" Probably not.

Then I walked my overpriced groceries next door to the drugstore to get band-aids.

Unnecessary detail coming up: I needed them because I have a scab the size of North Carolina right between my eyes, that would have healed weeks ago if I could stop touching it. I've been considering a dog cone or constantly wearing mittens, but then I thought of band-aids, and decided to pick some up a the drugstore.

For reasons I no longer remember I ended up in the first aid aisle, absentmindedly picking up all of the creams and reading the labels. I jumped when I heard a voice behind me.

"If you're looking for hydrocortisone don't waste money on the name brand! Look on the back - they've all got the same ingredients!" The man who owned the voice picked up a box and deftly flipped it around "This one's 3%, cheap, perfect, that's what I want!" and threw it confidently in a basket already filled with medications.

This is actually one of my favorite topics, so I jumped right in. "It's all a marketing game," I explained. "I bet you anything there's just one big factory out there making one kind of cream, and all the companies need to do is decide how they're going to package it and market it to make the most profit."

He liked this idea but topped it: "I got bitten by a poisonous spider last night and now my body is filled with its venom." I asked whether it had been in his house or whether he had been out in the wilderness, and crossed my fingers and silently chanted please say wilderness please say wilderness please say wilderness please say "Right in my own home!" he answered and the drugstore changed the radio from oldies to sinister without missing a beat. "It bit me while I was sleeping. You don't like thinking about THAT when you go to bed at night."

I can definitely work with the topic "Things you don't like to think about at night" and specifically remembered a youtube video I'd seen where someone put a vibrating machine in an old house. The vibrations bothered the spiders who were hiding unseen in the thick hollow walls and came pouring out of air vents and cracks by the thousands.

But I was obviously playing way out of my league and couldn't imagine the stories this guy would tell to top my spiders-in-the-walls video, so I bit my tongue. The momentary pain reminded me why I was there, and I picked up a box of bandages.

"Ah, Band-aids!" (what a great way to start a sentence!) "I buy a lot of those." he continued. He explained that he was 62 and bruised very easily, and pointed out a large raisin-colored spot on the back of his hand. "I'll just be doing things..." (he half-heartedly mimed reaching for a box of band-aids) and if my hand gets tapped it will bruise." I asked if band-aids helped prevent bruises - as soon as I said it the idea seemed stupid, but I couldn't think of any other reason.

"No, I wear them to cover my bruises when I go out, because I don't like people having to look at them." He looked down sadly at his hand, and the excitement of talking about spiders and how marketers were screwing with us was gone. My raisin-friend sighed. "I hope that doesn't happen to you when you're older."

Something about a man hoping a complete stranger would be able to avoid all the inevitable pitfalls of age, just because she had interesting opinions on pharmaceutical products and a healthy respect for spiders was so sweet to me that I couldn't think of a better response besides something stupid like "It happens to everyone." Would you hope the same thing for someone so clueless and naive? I remember when I was 15 my younger sisters would always tell me how disgusting my pubescent self was. "You're so gross! You're covered in spots!" and I would think just you wait. Just. You. Wait. The point is I'm not half as good as this man is.

And then I wished my scab were twice as big, because even though that would make it so large it would obscure my vision, it could remind him that these things don't matter. I had a scab the size of a state known for its fantastic wood furniture right in the middle of my face, and now that I'm at home typing I have an off-brand band-aid in the middle of my face, and at the end of the day that is not the most important thing about me. It's a shame that people see our bruises and our tattoos and our horrible self-infliced facial disfigurations before they have time to ask us what we know about spiders or what we're most scared of or what our favorite aisle in the drugstore is. Everyone has things they're not proud of about the way people see them.

And according to most people, all of these things are caused by tattoos.

Hello everyone who skipped to the bottom. Here is a song by the Magnetic Fields. If you're waiting for some water to boil you might want to watch that instead of the visuals in this video.

And here is me with a band-aid on my face. You probably don't get the reference.

I know I'm obnoxious

It can only be annoying to hear this but, my job is so fun that Fridays don't have the sparkle they used to. Proof: garbage pickup is on Fridays and I remember to take the trash to the curb about once every four weeks.

I still love weekends though, because when I don't have time to do laundry no one has a good week, and because all four of the local animal shelters have adoption events on Saturdays. There's nothing like hitting those up back to back to back to back in a clean shirt.

What is your favorite day? Does it involve homeless dogs?

September 22, 2011

when you come around

Here are some of the great dogs I work with. They don't actually do that much work. And one of them isn't great. But if you're a dog all is forgiven.

I no longer own a cell phone

Greetings from a 5-hour layover in Atlanta!

This morning I packed my whole life into a checked bag and a carry-on, and when I got to my gate they asked if I wanted to check my carry-on for free as well. Yes.

So now all I have is my laptop, my camera, and a magazine I saw that I had never heard of before, which is really terrifying. Because everything I own is floating somewhere between the Pacific Northwest and the Mediterranean, and because wouldn't you think by now I would have heard of every magazine that existed? This probably doesn't bode well for its quality. Or it could be my favorite magazine ever.

I'm soaking up these 5 hours because it's my first time ever being in the South. I don't know if I'm really getting a feel for it from inside the airport, but it looks normal. No mountains, no lakes, and everyone says it's warm out. They have crazy "recycling trash cans" here. They say "you trash, it sorts, we recycle" which I do not understand but sounds like a load of garbage, literally.  I gave the machine half a smoothie, good luck recycling that.

Thrilling. My next blog post will be about how I got lost and ended up in Bulgaria and was stranded there for 3 months, so stay tuned.

Reasons it's time to leave

Today three people told me they thought I had left already.
I'm out of cereal.
An saxophone player just moved into the apartment next door.

he haunts my nightmares

Reason I loved working in the adlab this summer #85: check out the music video we made!

So much pain, so much fun, so much fear of that guy with the drawn-on mustache.
You can see me in this video, if you have the vision of an Andean condor. It's going to be on the front page of YouTube tomorrow.

wearing my fiber content on my sleeve

This is what I wore today.

And yes, this is also my application photo for America's Next Top Model, thanks for asking. I'm bringing the "Awkward Lean and Smirk" to the masses.
I was feeling pretty awesome until halfway through the day I noticed this:

As personal wardrobe malfunctions go, this certainly doesn't top the time in kindergarten I pulled off my sweater on the playground and my shirt came off with it. That event boldly up-seated the day I tucked my dress into my underwear when I was four. But both incidents were put to shame when in third grade I wore a boat-neck sweater, and while I was playing tag with a boy I liked the neck of the sweater somehow became wider than my shoulders. Hopefully nothing ever tops that. Fashion is really hard.

the saddest painting in the world

How early is too early to start packing? I already have everything in my suitcases except for a couple strange things I don't need this year.

Like the three bottles of lotion I'm trying to use up in the next two weeks - my skin has never felt so soft.

And this gem of a cat painting I'm donating to the local thrift store.

I promise this isn't a salad

There are a lot of French idioms that are so logical, like "having a cat in your throat" (getting a cough or a weird voice), and there are ones that are awesome, like "telling someone a salad" (telling lies).

And then there are idioms that aren't logical or awesome.

Some girls living in Marseille just emailed me and said that we should be roommates. "You would be perfect in the sein of our apartment!" they said. And I thought "Sein must not mean what I thought it meant." But it does. And I guess it's a nice way of telling someone they will fit right in.

Eighteen days until I leave! I hope my visa gets here soon.

August 19, 2010

time to migrate

There are a number of reasons I don't like our apartment, but before this week none of them were "it could be the set of a horror movie."

We live on the third floor and we shared a dark, creepy stairwell with an awesome couple, until they moved out in April. When months passed and no one moved in, I started complaining that we didn't have any stairwell friends. I spoke too soon.

No one knows what horribly evil place they came from, how they got here, or why we specifically were cursed. All I do know is that the day the birds arrived was an especially dark day. I heard high-pitched violin music and an ominous mist filled the apartment complex.

Our new stairwell companions are two giant, black, swooping birds. Swooping may not sound like an adjective that evokes terror but believe me, it should. One bird sits on top of our door frame and the other sits on the emergency handle across from our door. They sit there and they wait until I forget about them and step outside. As soon as I do the bird on our door swoops down and waves his feathers at me, and the emergency handle bird makes a beeline for my face. Then they both start pecking my eyes out while I scream for mercy. The last part was added for dramatic effect, but seriously, these birds are not normal birds.

Nothing I do will scare them away for more then five minutes. And sometimes, when I peek out to see if it's safe, the emergency handle one just stares at me, with those creepy beady bird eyes. They can't be building a nest on top of our door frame. Why would they build a nest there? No, they're probably just waiting until the right moment to peck my eyes out.

I'm eating an enraged cow

As my knowledge of French idioms expands, this blog will slowly become even less comprehensible than it already is. To both French and English speakers.

The cocktail of prescription drugs I'm taking (watch your back, bronchitis) has really messed me up this week. Most of them cause "racing heart" and "a sense of nervousness," which I hoped would be balanced by my other medication's side-effect of "an increased sense of well-being" But actually the combination is disturbing.

I don't know how to describe it except to say that I feel like early tomorrow morning I'm taking my driver's license test, speaking in public, and then going to Disneyland. There's a tarantula on my shoulder and the room won't stop spinning. I can't shake the feeling that I'm forgetting something important. And dang, I just feel good about myself.

Tina Fey

I've been home a lot this week, and between fever-induced hallucinations and nightmares, I've been thinking about one of my favorite daydreams : the one where I'm a cast member on SNL. This daydream usually starts right in the middle, because even with painkillers my mind can't think of a plausible explanation for how I end up on SNL. But it feels really good to be famous.

In real life, when people ask me if I have any acting experience, or when they don't, I like to tell them I played Mary from The Secret Garden when I was twelve. And what makes this foolproof is that no one has ever asked what the play was. They always assume it was The Secret Garden.

The fact is, it wasn't The Secret Garden - it was a one-act musical about ghostbusters investigating a haunted library where book characters (like me) appear out of nowhere. I wasn't supposed to have any lines, but they wrote one for me because if I didn't have anything to say I stared awkwardly into the audience. And my stare really creeps people out. My line was "What are you doing here?" to Colin, the sick boy, who then had a monologue about being locked up and not being able to walk. The boy who played Colin loved Cool Ranch Doritos.

I mention this fact because if the story ever made it this far, I would change the topic from acting to Doritos, a subject I know much more about.

August 4, 2010

reunion

We had the best weekend ever with Lincoln and Vindie, who let us leech off of them for a week in San Francisco. Highlights included cats mating, an old man serenading us in a Mexican restaurant, nine tacos, the metro, a pirate shop, 7-year-old superheros, elk heads, a jelly bean factory, making Livvy recite animal sounds, and a dachshund.

The bad news (lowlight?) is that I don't get to see Vindie every day, but it was a killer weekend.

Livvy is probably going to be a Gap Baby model or a nuclear physicist pretty soon. Coolest baby in the world.

pinkie swear

If you listen to this song you will have a great day, I promise. If you dance to it you will have the best day of your life.

I am going to San Francisco to see the most awesome friend and the cutest baby, they both live in the same place. And while I'm there I might pick up a visa to go to France. Hey-o! That didn't make sense there but I've always wanted to type it. Exhilarating.

we will not tone it down

This afternoon, New Brooke was born. New Brooke WILL NOT be pushed around. New Brooke has never said "Sure, I guess all 8 of you can stay at my apartment," or "That's ok, it's a pretty old car anyway."

New Brooke never pauses, she always speaks her mind. "Um" is not in her vocabulary. This makes saying the word "umbrella" impossible, but New Brooke is resourceful, and calls it a "rain shield."

If a fast-food employee gives New Brooke a different ice cream flavor than the one she asked for, she won't throw it away, or try and sell it to her friends. She will hit him in the face with her rain shield. I mean, she'll politely tell him he gave her the wrong flavor.

When people sneeze, New Brooke says "Bless you!" very loudly, instead of being too nervous to say anything, and regretting it all day.

New Brooke loves tacos. Old Brooke loved tacos too actually.

July 26, 2010

not too exciting

This is my 140th blog post. To celebrate I'm going to put together all of the drafts I wrote but never ended up posting. Mostly because they were boring. But since a 140th post isn't really something to celebrate anyway, I think this is a fitting way to pay tribute.

30 June 2010
Lately I've been listening to a podcast about a French woman's daily life.
Lately she's either become very sick or an extreme hypochondriac. She's been to a podiatrist, a dentist, a heart doctor, an eye doctor, and an orthodontist just in the last 8 days. I don't know what I expected from a podcast about daily life in France, but I don't think this possibility ever crossed my mind.

31 March 2010
Today while I was sitting in the waiting room of a doctors' office for 2 hours, they showed on tv some people who had been stuck on a carnival ride for an hour. And I though "What do they know about waiting." Because all of the magazines in the waiting room were from the 2008 election. At least they didn't have to read about the bailout, and they were rescued after just one hour.

13 January 2010
Yesterday we washed 51 pounds of laundry.
Today I am wearing clothes I had forgotten I owned.

5 January 2010
Animal fact of the week: Cockatoos can bite harder than any other bird. I hate them.
(A cockatoo bit a hole in the jacket I got for Christmas. I later forgave her so there was no need to post this.)

July 23, 2010

epic

Today we hosted an awesome water balloon fight with 4,000 people. Also we filled 120,000 balloons, and filmed a music video.

But the highlight was that while I was standing in the middle getting pelted in the face with the balloons that really stung because I made them too small because I am lazy, I got the first bruise I have ever gotten in my life. I hope some of you get to see this in person because there's no telling how long it will last.

I'm getting really attached to it.
